University of Hawaii College of Engineering Alumni Feature – DeAnna Hayashi
Written By: University of Hawaii College of Engineering
Deanna Hayashi graduated from UH in 1995 with a BS in Civil Engineering. After receiving her MS degree, she began working at Austin, Tsutsumi & Associates, Inc. (ATA) in 2004, becoming the Vice President as well as their first female Chief Engineer. With over 22 years of experience as a Civil Engineer, DeAnna spent time in California working in land development before relocating to Hawaii. Her projects include the design of master planned communities, subdivisions and infrastructure projects, reflecting her passion for creating communities that people can live and thrive in.
DeAnna’s proudest moment was having her company named one of the Best Places to Work in Hawaii. One of her non-engineering related jobs is being the head of the Health and Wellness Committee at ATA, creating programming to help form a culture of camaraderie, integrity and care – values that she holds close to her heart.
DeAnna also loves working with younger students in the community, exposing them to engineering and the design process. For the past twelve years, with the support from school staff, she’s been running a popsicle stick bridge project and Junior Engineering Night for Moanalua Elementary. For many of those years, the UH ASCE Student Chapter has helped run the activities.
